High Taxes, Low Returns – A Software Engineer’s Voice in India

Hi friends, I’m a software engineer in India, and today I want to talk about something we all think about — income tax.

We all know that when the government makes rules, we must follow them. Paying taxes is one of those rules. Whether we like it or not, we cannot escape it.

And honestly, paying tax is not a bad thing. Our tax money is used to protect our borders, run the army, build roads, schools, and hospitals. Without taxes, a country cannot grow.

So yes, we accept it. We pay it. Because it is our duty as responsible taxpayers in India.

Why Taxes Feel Like a Burden for Salaried Employees

Even though paying tax is important, many salaried professionals feel the income tax burden is high. Why?

The truth is, in India, only a small percentage of people actually pay income tax. Most are outside the tax system. This means salaried employees — especially in IT jobs and software engineering — end up paying a large share.

Compared to other countries, the burden feels heavier here because India’s tax base is narrow. In other nations, more people contribute, so the load is shared.

The Bigger Problem: Low Returns on Taxes Paid

We are paying high taxes in India, but when we look around, we don’t always see the same level of public services coming back to us.

  • Roads are not great.

  • Healthcare is expensive.

  • School fees are high.

This creates a common feeling:

“I’m paying so much tax, but I’m not getting enough benefits in return.”

And yes, this is true. The government needs to improve public services for taxpayers.

The Life of a Software Engineer in Metro Cities

Most of us live in metro cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, where:

  • Rent is very high.

  • School fees are high.

  • Daily living costs keep rising.

So even though our software engineer salaries look good on paper, saving money is difficult. And when layoffs happen, life can turn upside down within just a few months.

A Fair Proposal for High Taxpayers in India

If a software engineer — or any high taxpayer — loses their job, there should be government support:

  • At least six months of income support based on their tax slab.

  • Lifetime basic health insurance linked to the taxes they have already paid.

This is not free money. This is fairness for taxpayers.
We followed the rules. We paid our share. So when we are in trouble, the tax system in India should also support us.

Closing Message

We accept paying taxes. We will continue to pay because it is our duty.

But in return, we request the government to:

  1. Improve public services.

  2. Provide fair benefits to salaried taxpayers.

Only then will taxpayers feel safe, respected, and motivated to keep supporting the system.
