Periya Marudhu (Elder) and Chinna Marudhu (Younger) were brothers from Sivagangai, born into a warrior family.

After the British killed their king Muthuvaduganatha Thevar, they sheltered his wife Velu Nachiyar, and together they fought back.

In 1780, they helped Queen Velu Nachiyar reclaim her kingdom from the British—decades before the 1857 revolt.
Later, they led a massive uprising in 1801, uniting local rulers, tribal warriors, and the public against the British.
The Maruthu Brothers even issued a call for revolution, asking all Indians to rise and fight colonial rule—a bold move never seen before.
Their 1801 “Proclamation of Independence” is one of the earliest in Indian history!

Seeing their growing influence, the British launched a ruthless attack. After weeks of resistance, the brothers were captured.
On October 24, 1801, both were publicly hanged in Tirupattur, trying to break the spirit of rebellion.
